Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her grandmother, mom as well as godparents. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized this was not the best place for her. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time she applied for and was awarded a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford did not graduate in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
